Online meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) UNESCO Chapter was held on 25 June 2020

The first online meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) UNESCO Chapter was held on 25 June 2020 under the chairmanship of Ambassador Anar Karimov, Head of the Permanent Delegation of the Republic of Azerbaijan to UNESCO. The meeting was attended by Firmin Eduard Matoko, Assistant Director-General of UNESCO for Priority Africa and External Relations, permanent delegates of the NAM Member States and observer States to UNESCO.

Recognizing the measures taken by UNESCO to minimize the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on education, science, culture and communication, Ambassador A. Karimov stressed the importance of continued cooperation between countries and international organizations in order to eliminate the negative impacts of the pandemic. In this regard, Ambassador underlined the important role that NAM plays in promoting multilateralism and international solidarity. It was also noted that the continuity of education must be ensured, cultural heritage must be protected and the fight against misinformation must be intensified in these difficult times.

Assistant Director-General F.E. Matoko informed the participants on the measures taken by UNESCO in the fight against COVID-19. He noted that today the world needs more multilateralism, solidarity and mutual cooperation.
